Supporting Patients Facing Food Insecurity: VENA Benefits in Virginia
Food insecurity can significantly impact health outcomes, making it harder for patients to manage chronic conditions, recover from illness, or maintain overall well-being. To help address this issue, Governor Youngkin recently announced the Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance (VENA) initiative.
How VENA Works:
- Current SNAP recipients in Virginia will receive weekly state-supported emergency food assistance, based on their existing SNAP eligibility.
- Benefits will be issued through the existing Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, making access simple and convenient.
- VENA payments will arrive weekly—on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday—following the current SNAP issuance schedule.
- The program is expected to continue at least through November 2025.
